DIY Wedding Invitations – How to ‘Design it Yourself’ Without the Stress of ‘Do it Yourself’

When you dream about your wedding, how do you imagine it? Have you considered DIY wedding invitations as you want them to be unique and personal to you both? If the answer is yes, STOP right there! The DIY or ‘do it yourself’ approach whilst very personal can also be very time consuming. Unless you have the skills required, it can also be very stressful. (Have a read of ‘Why You Need a Wedding Stationer’ for more information.)

So, here’s my suggestion. Rather than ‘do it yourself’ how about ‘design it yourself’ and let me do the rest? Your exclusive luxury wedding invites can be designed by you and handmade with skill and perfection by me.

I recently worked with Ellie on her ‘DIY’ wedding invitations. Ellie and her partner Mark wanted very unique and personal handmade wedding invitations and the outcome was just perfect.

Getting to know my client

‘Hiya, I’ve been following your page for quite some time now and it’s finally time for me to start thinking about ordering our wedding invitations… I have a few ideas as to what we’d like …’

Ellie got in touch via my Inspired by Lisa facebook page which she had been following for some time. She had been searching for her dream wedding invitations without success. Ellie had a collection of saved images for inspiration along with a head full of ideas. She knew the look that she wanted to achieve but couldn’t find it anywhere. We talked about the wedding venue, the chosen colour scheme and the look that they both wanted to achieve for their wedding invitations. The wedding venue was particularly important as it is on a beach in Ilfracombe in Devon. This was to become the main theme for the invitations.

Unique ‘DIY’ wedding invitations

Ellie sent me various images she had collected for inspiration. She was also very keen to fulfil her own ideas. Ellie and Mark had their own wedding logo which had already been uniquely designed for them to use throughout their wedding. This logo was a must for their wedding invitations too. They had also recently had an engagement photoshoot on a beach in Ilfracombe and really wanted to make use of their beautiful images.

Design Ideas

I discussed at length with Ellie, several design ideas. It was important at this stage to discover what Ellie liked and disliked and the design elements that were most important to her. I listened to Ellie’s requirements and looked at the images she had sent me for inspiration. I shared several images of wedding invitations that I had already made along with suggestions of how I could incorporate everything that she wanted and keep with her beach theme. Ellie particularly liked my Meadow pocketfold design with the wash background and a personalised belly band.

Handmade wedding invitation samples

These handmade wedding invitations were going to be very bespoke and a sample would definitely be required. Ellie wasn’t quite sure what I meant by some of the design elements that I suggested, however she was happy for me to try design ideas.  She was confident in my skills as well as my understanding of her ideas and the look she wanted to achieve. I produced 2 samples based on all that we had discussed. This meant she had some choice and alternative ideas to consider. Before making Ellie’s samples, we discussed the possible cost of subsequent invites to keep things transparent and informed.

‘You’re literally the best! Never been more thankful for stumbling across a Facebook page. (I was getting stressed about finding a stationer) x’

DIY Wedding Invitations Order

‘Hi Lisa! We received our samples yesterday and are absolutely over the moon with what you’ve put together for us. So I’ll get in touch in the next day or so to confirm everything and have a look at starting to write the info etc we’d like xx’

Ellie and Matt received their samples and were over the moon. Ellie was very precise, and after discussions with her Maid of Honours, she had a few tweaks that she wanted me to try for her. The third sample was sent and we were good to go!

‘So we received our third sample today…… and we absolutely LOVE IT!!! The logo looks amazing the way you’ve done it. Thank you so so much for adapting it all, it all looks amazing.’

‘I know I’m a perfectionist but thank you so so much for your patience. They are going to be PERFECT!!! Xxx’

Final handmade bespoke wedding invitations

The next stage in the process was for Elle and Matt to place their order. Once the design was approved, Ellie sent me all of the wording that she would like to include in her invitations. I arranged it accordingly and sent proofs via email. Of course, there were many unique touches to the wording such as icons instead of headings and very personal wording.

‘Hello lovely! Just wanted to let you know that I FINALLY put our invites together last night and got them all posted this morning. They’re absolutely perfect – can’t wait for people to start receiving them!! X

‘They’re exactly what I wanted and a million times more x’

Thank you

When Ellie first contacted me, she had no idea what to expect from me but knew what she wanted to achieve. After much conversation she gained trust in my knowledge and experience and felt confident that I was able to achieve what she wanted. Thank you so much to Ellie and Mark for choosing me to make their perfect wedding invitations for them. I am very excited to be making their matching ‘on the day’ stationery soon.

‘Just wanna say a massive thank you to Lisa for our wedding invitations. They’ve been sat here for a few weeks now but yesterday evening I finally put them all together and posted them out this morning. They are absolutely PERFECT. I am, annoyingly, an absolute perfectionist when it comes to things like this and had Lisa tweaking the tiniest of things over the course of us designing these and putting our ideas together and not once did she object. They are absolutely everything we thought they’d be and so much more – I’ve never been more grateful to have stumbled across a Facebook page. I cannot wait for our guests to receive them over the next few days! Thank you so so much Lisa, you are so great! I’ll continue to recommend you to anyone that asks and we’ll be in touch soon to organise our signage’ – Ellie and Matt

Wedding Planning – 10 Top Tips You Will Need to Know When Choosing Your Wedding Invites

Nothing makes it seem more real than receiving your dream wedding invites and delivering them to your guests. This is the first glimpse into the style or theme of your wedding day. Before you can send your wedding invites, there are a few things to consider first. Style, wording, colours, timescales can all seem like endless and overwhelming decisions. Well it doesn’t have to be. Here are few handy tips to get you started.

1. Do you want to send save the dates before your wedding invites?

Save the date cards are sent before wedding invites and are usually sent within a month or two of setting your wedding date and confirming your venue. This is essentially alerting your guests to the fact that they are going to be invited to your wedding and that they should mark the date in their calendars. However, they certainly aren’t mandatory and it does also mean that you need to have your guest list confirmed at the very early stages of your wedding planning.

2. Define your wedding style or theme

When you are planning your wedding, before you can even think about your wedding invites, you will need to decide on a theme or style for your day. This will also help to determine the formality of your wedding. Pinterest is a great place to start when looking for inspiration. Whatever style or theme you choose, your wedding invites should reflect that. This is the first glimpse your guests will have into your wedding day giving them a taste of what is to come!

3. Choose your wedding colours

Choosing your colour scheme is really important when creating your style. Your chosen colours will need to flow through your decor, flowers, cake, bridesmaids dresses etc. Often the time of year can help with choosing your colours such as Spring fresh pastels or Autumnal rich berry tones. Choose colours you are comfortable with and don’t feel compelled to use the latest trend colours. For example, neon yellow might not be your thing!!

4. How many wedding invites do you need?

The most common mistake that people make when counting up their numbers for wedding invites, is to count the number of guests. Generally your guests will be in couples or families. Therefore as a rough gauge, you will probably require approximately half the amount of wedding invites to the number of guests. This is always a very welcome surprise when my clients realise their invitation bill just halved! Always order a few spare in case you have missed somebody off your list.

5. Choosing the right wedding invite format for you

Wedding invites come in all shapes, sizes and styles. Pocketfolds, bundles, flat cards, wallets etc. I bet you are confused now right?! The first thing to decide is the design style that you like the appearance of. Perhaps you like wedding invites with belly bands or invitations with a safe place such as a pocket to keep all of the extra information. Once you have chosen a design style, then you need to think about the amount of extra information you want to provide your guests. If it is simply the venue, time and date, then a flat card may be suitable for you. If you would like to add inserts with information such as accommodation, gifts and an RSVP, then a pocketfold of some description may be more appropriate.

6. Consider your budget

The price of a wedding invite can vary dramatically. If you have a budget that you need to stick to, then this will determine your choices. However invitations can often be adjusted to suit your budget whether it needs to be simplified to reduce the cost without altering the quality or perhaps the embellishments and finishing need to be enhanced for something more luxurious.

7. Wedding invite samples

Wedding invites can look very beautiful on a screen, especially when the images have been taken in a studio setting with perfect lighting and carefully chosen props. It is often very difficult to show the true colours and textures of an invitation in a photo. The feel and weight of an invitation is also very important, especially if you are looking for something luxurious. Therefore, my advice would be to order a sample before making your final decision.

8. What information should I include?

Wedding invites are first and foremost a means of information for your guests. The couples names, wedding date and venue are of course vital information. Reply details are also of great importance so that your guests can inform you of their acceptance. You may choose to keep your invitations simple and only include the essential details. Alternatively you may choose to inform your guests about local accommodation or taxi companies particularly if your guests do not know the area local to your wedding venue. You may have a gift list or would prefer money towards a honeymoon or house renovation. Some couples like to offer their guests a choice of menu for the wedding breakfast which also needs to be included in the wedding invites. For more information on what to include in your wedding invitations, please read more HERE.

9. Book your wedding invite production slot early

As a wedding stationer my diary can fill up very quickly several months in advance. There are certain months of the year which can be more busy than others. It is advisable to book your production slot with your wedding stationer as soon as possible particularly for wedding invites. A production slot booking will secure your space in the diary even if you haven’t made a final decision on your chosen wedding stationery. Highly recommended.

Handmade Wedding Invites – How Much do Handmade Wedding Invitations Cost?

There is no simple answer. Handmade wedding invites can be as simple or as luxurious as you desire. The cost of a handmade wedding invite can vary dramatically and will depend on several contributing factors. The cost will also be determined by you as a couple and your preferences. This won’t just apply to your wedding invitations and stationery either!

The Type of Card Used to Make Your Wedding Invites

luxury handmade wedding invitation bundle rose gold glitter bellyband copper foil edge

There are many different types of card that can be used to make handmade wedding invites. A card with a higher GSM value is usually preferred as it will give a good quality and heavyweight feel to your invitations. There are also many varieties of special cards such as glitter, foil and handmade papers the cost of which will be considerably more than a plain card.

Printing Handmade Wedding Invites

handmade wedding invitations white dark silver foil graphic font invite bellyband rsvp information

The cost of printing handmade wedding invitations includes not just the card, but the ink too. A good quality printer uses several individual colour inks and will be printing at the highest quality to achieve the best print for your invitations. This uses a lot of ink.

Embellishments and Ribbons

rolls of coloured ribbon

If you are looking for a luxury handmade wedding invite, then embellishments and ribbons will definitely help to achieve a luxurious finish. I prefer to use the best quality ribbons to avoid the snagging and fraying that you get with a lower quality product. There are also many crystal or pearl embellishments which add a beautiful finish to your invitations but these can vary in cost from 50p up to several pounds.

How Much Information Needs to be Included?

luxury handmade wedding invitations pocketfold inside inserts copper foil

The amount of information you choose to give your guests will impact on the cost of your handmade wedding invites. All of my invitations collections have added information inserts with the option to add more should they be required. For lots of information on what to include in your wedding invitations, click HERE and have a read.

From a Collection or Bespoke Design

Most handmade wedding stationery companies will have a collection of designs to choose from or offer a completely bespoke service. My collection of designs can be bought exactly as they are seen with your personal information added, or you can put your own stamp on a design and request alterations to suit your wedding. There is also the option to have a totally unique bespoke design made specific to your requirements, all of which are contributing factors when it comes to the cost of a handmade wedding invitation.

Personalised for Your Guests

Writing your guests names in handmade wedding invites is something that many couples dread. Having your guests names printed does add to the cost; however it is peace of mind that your invitations have been finished perfectly without any mistakes. After all, a mistake would be a wasted precious invitation!

Handmade Wedding Invites

inspired by lisa photo at work making place cards in studio

One of the most important factors with regards to your handmade wedding invites, is the fact that they are just that; handmade! Making something by hand, no matter what the item is, takes time and skill. The time it takes to make a handmade wedding invite will depend on the design and the amount of work involved which will of course determine the price. The quality of a handmade wedding invite should be exceptional, no matter how much it costs. The very best way to achieve the perfect handmade wedding invite is by having a professional wedding stationer. Why? Read HERE to find out why it is so important.
